In terms of education, Ndianda has a pre-school, a Coranic school, 2 public elementary school and one public middle school. There are several other private schools in the village. In this article, we will provide the historical background and presentation of the public elementary schools, and propose solutions to the current problems of education in general in the village.
HISTORY
Ndianda's primary school was built in 1964. It consisted of a single classroom built opposite to Saint Etienne Church, West of the village.
In September 1969, the site was relocated in the center of the village in Ndianda Yigo. It consisted of two functional classrooms and accommodation for the Director on duty. A school canteen was also set up to enable pupils living far from the school to have their midday meal on site. Additional classrooms were built in 1994 by Father Felix Colombo, the parish priest at the time, with the support of the Amicale des Ressortissants de Ndianda in Dakar.
PRESENTATION
The elementary school is located in the center of the village of Ndianda, next to the village health post. The school has an open area of over 4200 m2. According to the most recent Director's statistics, 800 pupils were enrolled in Grade 1 to 6. The number of teachers on duty is 15 with 8 functional classrooms.
Given the increasing success rate of pupils entering 7th grade, and the many social difficulties encountered by village pupils in gaining access to the colleges in the nearest cities of Joal and Nguéniène, the authorities felt the need to open a middle school in the village of Ndianda. Thus, in October 2011, the village saw the birth of its first 7th grade class (also called 6th Grade in the Senegalese System), and each year a new class will be added. In 2014, the village of Ndianda officially had its full Middle financed by the Japanese Cooperation in Senegal.
IADN, having been made aware of these difficulties, has supported education in Ndianda since its creation.
Since its creation, AIDN has made education in Ndianda a priority.
In 2013, the first action developed by AIDN in the village of Ndianda had the main objective of improving the academic skills of primary and secondary school pupils. AIDN financed the project to the tune of 3 million fcfa (3,000 euros). The project made it possible to provide pupils in Ndianda's elementary school and CEM with school supplies, including math and French books, notebooks, pens, etc.
The specific objectives of this campaign were to:
Encourage teachers
Encourage students (1300 beneficiaries)
Increase end-of-year exam pass rates
Support parents and families
In 2014, a larger campaign was carried out, with many more books purchased for the Collège d'Enseignement Moyen (CEM).
In 2015, AIDN provided substantial support to pupils and students from Ndianda, who are members of the Association des Elèves et Etudiants Ressortissants de Ndianda (AEERN). The aim of this action was to assist students from the village who are pursuing their studies at the universities of Dakar and Saint Louis, far from their respective families. Non-scholarship and even scholarship students sometimes face enormous difficulties in making ends meet at these various institutions, which are only located in urban areas.
In 2016, AIDN initiated a pilot project in school reinforcement dedicated to all students in Exam class. It benefited pupils in the CM2 class at Ndianda and pupils in the 3e class at the CEM. The pilot program showed that providing assistance in Maths, English, French and Science helped to improve success rates in end-of-year exams (Certificat, Entrée en Sixième and Brevet de Fin d'Étude Moyenne).
The actions carried out consisted in assisting families in the field of education, encouraging pupils and teachers, and raising the quality of teaching in the village schools.
The initiative was a resounding success, welcomed by pupils and teachers alike. It was therefore renewed in 2017 with a larger budget and a focus on Maths, Science and Reading.
In 2018, the reinforcement program was renewed for the benefit of students in exam classes. Students and pupils at AEERN were again able to benefit from real support during several actions spread over the year for a total of 72 hours, days during which AEERN organized cultural and sporting activities in the village.
In 2019, the reinforcement program was also renewed, with pupils and students once again receiving financial support for the organization of these 72 hours of annual activity.
In 2020, the medical emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic led us to review our plans. The reinforcement program was temporarily suspended. Since 2020, IADN has been focusing on building and equipping a multifunctional double sized classroom that will enable students to learn technology or benefit from new technologies to enhance their learning and have access to the reading room.
The classroom was built in 2020, the roof was completed in 2021 and the search for funding to equip it is still underway.
